In the far distance it is just possible to make out a view of Windsor. In the summer of 1805 Varley had lodgings in Twickenham and encouraged his pupils to make oil studies along the banks of the Thames. He took the opportunity to explore to the west of London as the exhibitions the following year included his first views of Windsor and Eton.
