Buildwas Abbey was a subject Rooker painted in both oil and watercolour. Another version is in the collection of the Whitworth Art Gallery, Manchester (see P. Connor, Michael Angelo Rooker (1746-1801), London, 1984, p. 53). The present watercolour differs in the disposition of the group of gypsies around the campfire and in the goats in the foreground. Foreground details such as this are typical of Rooker and make the ruined architecture of such buildings less imposing.
