Lot Essay

This group of designs by the young A.W.Pugin is significant because it proves his early interest in furniture and metalwork. The signed and dated drawing of a heavy Jacobean table by the thirteen year old boy is thus some eighteen months before he starts work on the Gothic fittings of George IV's new appartments at Windsor Castle. Several of the other designs date from the period 1829-31 when he set up his first independent business in Hart Street, Covent Garden, making internal fittings and furnishings. The extravagant metalwork objects are reminiscent of the elaborate silver lamp which Pugin designed for St.Margaret's Convent, Edinburgh in 1834.
