Lot Essay
Arthur A. Dixon was a figurative painter in both oil and watercolour who exhibited at the Royal Academy and Royal Society of British Artists. The Queen of Clubs is typical of Dixon's literary and historical genre subjects, being stylised and colourful with areas of intricate detail. It is particularly comparable, in both date and period feel, to the oil The King's Garden; or The Harvest of Labour (sold Christie's, London, 29 November 1985, lot 91, £9,000).
