Lot Essay

The present watercolour depicts a figure gathering firewood is similar in composition to a smaller watercolour, entitled North Downs Landscape, which was included in the touring exhibition at the Yale Centre for British Art, Cleveland Museum of Art and the Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery, Victorian Landscape Watercolours, 9 September 1992-12 April 1993, no. 113. However it has been suggested that the scene depicted may been in Whitley, Surrey, close to Allingham's home. The subject was a popular one, for another watercolour of the same title see I. Taylor, Helen Allingham's England, Devon, 1990, p.23.
