After leaving his beloved Corfu (see lot 153) in 1864 Lear travelled to England, before deciding to spend the winter on the French Riviera. Lear began to work on the watercolours for his exhibition. However during this period, along with his servant Giorgio, he spent a month walking between sixteen and twenty miles a day along the coast to Genoa before returning to Nice on New Year's Eve. This trip would explain the two dates inscribed on the present watercolour.
