Lot Essay

After spending the winter in Nice (see lot 154) Lear returned to England in 1865 and was commissioned by Lady Waldegrave to execute a painting of Venice, which he began during the winter of that year, visiting the city. Lear found Venice foggy, but as it cleared he was excited by the architecture and sunsets. Lady Waldegrve had left the subject matter up to Lear and he travelled slowly up and down the canals in a gondola, deciding upon a subject.
