Lot Essay

Keith Gardner comments, 'Russell Flint originally entitled this The Birth of Aphrodite, writing it on the back of the picture. At the last moment, he changed his mind and drew a line through it - writing above in a clear hand, 'Rococo Aphrodite'. Aphrodite, the Greek goddess of love, was the Lisping Goddess of his book with that title' (loc. cit.).
