The plaques chased with allegorical female figures, representing Patience, Temperance, Fortitude and Hope, later mounted on an ebonised wood panel applied in the centre with the silver figure of Athena and with furniture mounts applied on the border, marked on each panel, the mounts and figure unmarked
The plaques from 3½in. (9cm.) high by 2 3/8in. (6cm.) wide to 3¾in. (9.3cm.) high by 3 5/8in. (9.3cm.) wide

The reliefs are based on engravings by Jacob Mathan dated 1588, which are after designs by Hendrik Goltzius (see exhibition catalogue Staatsgalerie Stuttgart, Der Welt Lauf, 1997/1998, p. 27, fig. 3.7., p. 33, fig. 3.2 and p. 34, fig. 3.6).
