Lot Essay

The present lot is closely related to a number of similar small frames carved in fruit or boxwood (one of which is in the Wallace Collection, London; see J. G. Mann, Wallace Collection Catalogues - Sculpture, London, 1931, no. S293, pl. 73), however the rather rigid carving and lack of wear on the present lot suggest it was actually carved in the 19th century.
