Pegasus depicted rearing, with Mercury holding his caduceus; on an integral naturalistic bronze base bearing the signature in one corner 'Coysevox. 1709.'.
Greenish brown patina; an element lacking from Mercury's left hand.

Antoine Coysevox's colossal marble equestrian groups of Fame and Mercury were executed between 1701 and 1702 during the reign of Louis XIV and originally commissioned to adorn the ornamental horse pond at Marly. In 1719, however, they were replaced with Guillaume Coustou's horses and subsequently moved to the entrance of the Tulieries gardens, Paris.
