Lot Essay

The present bronze figure is notable for the extremely high degree of finish, typical of French bronzes from the very late 18th and early 19th century in France. Although unidentified, the sitter is reminiscent of portraits executed by Canova and his followers, such as the marble of Napoleon's mother, Madame Letitia, at Chatsworth, executed by Canova in 1804-1807.
