Lot Essay

This particularly fine view of Westminster, with its dramatic sky reminiscent of the work of Sebastian and Henry Pether, was one of several executed by John MacVicar Anderson. Another, Westminster Bridge, the Houses of Parliament and Westminster Abbey seen from the River, of 1872, can now be seen in the Museum of London. Anderson specialised in views of the capital, and exhibited at the Royal Academy between 1856 and 1896. He was also a practising architect, and designed the facade of Christie's, King Street.
