AUTOGRAPH LETTERS. A collection of letters addressed to Sir Henry Thompson, or Lady Thompson, comprising autograph letters signed by Clara SCHUMANN (1871, sending an address, one page, 8vo), Joseph JOACHIM (n.d., declining an invitation; 'I look forward with utmost pleasure to make Brahms's beautiful Sonata known to you; it is a favourite piece of a favourite composer'), Robert BROWNING (28 June 1871: he has lost an invitation to the performance of a requiem, and asks Lady Thompson to remind him of the date -- 'I would not miss such a delight', one page, 8vo), John Everett MILLAIS, Thomas CARLYLE (fragment, four lines with signature), Harriet MARTINEAU (fragment, 3 lines with signature) and W.P. Frith; 7 letters in total (most backed onto card).
Sir Henry Thompson, 1st Bart (1820-1904) was one of the most celebrated surgeons of his age, specialising particularly in removals of bladder-stones: he operated on both Leopold I of Belgium and Napoleon III of France (in 1873); he had wide-ranging cultural interests, and wrote novels as well as a number of medical texts; there is a portrait by Millais at the National Portrait Gallery.
