DARWIN, Charles (1809-1882). Autograph letter signed ('C. Darwin') to Hugh Falconer, Down, Bromley, Kent, 4 October [1862], one page, 8vo, on a bifolium (short tear to horizontal fold).

Darwin writes 'In Haste' to assure Falconer that he has returned his manuscript, with his own letter, 'to Park Crescent, & there I have no doubt you will find it safe. - I shd indeed be grieved if it was lost'.
The manuscript referred to is almost certainly Falconer's essay 'On the American fossil elephant' (Natural Historical Review, 1863, pp.43-114), which he had sent to Darwin with a letter of 24-27 September [1862]. Darwin's letter of 1 October (referred to here), commenting on the manuscript, survives: he was delighted with the paper, and pleased to see that Falconer did not believe in immutable species.
