John Newton was the joint author with William Cowper of the Olney Hymns (1779). He had passed his early years at sea, before the development of a strong evangelical religious experience led to ordination. He took the curacy of Olney, where, in the year after the present letter, Cowper and Mrs Unwin settled; he was later an influential preacher as incumbent of St Mary Woolnoth in London.
