WESLEY, John (1703-1791). Autograph letter signed ('J. Wesley') to Penelope Newman ('Dear Penny'), Bristol, 23 September 1773, one page, 4to (split through at folds with loss of approximately three words, some staining).
A commendation of the Methodist community in Cheltenham: 'Bro: Wolf will always be usefull to the Children of GOD; because he is wholly devoted to Him', commending also his successor, Billy Collins, and the 'liveliness of Billy Severn': 'if they both love & assist each other with their might, there will be a glorious work in the circuit'. Wesley would have been glad to see the recipient, but he is setting out for London within a fortnight. 'See that you press on to know the height and depth, and length & breadth, of that Love of GOD which passeth knowledge'.
Wesley was based in Bristol throughout September 1773. Penelope Newman was his most zealous follower in Cheltenham, and evangelised the surrounding villages; a number of Wesley's letters to her survive. She kept a bookshop in Cheltenham, and later married a Methodist preacher.
