Engraved portrait frontispieces. 3 lithographic maps, 2 folding and printed in colours, folding letterpress table, woodcut maps in the text. 32-page publisher's catalogue dated November 1858 bound in at the end of vol. I. (Scattered light spotting.) Original red cloth by Bone & Son with their tickets, boards blocked in blind, spines blocked in blind and lettered in gilt, cloth slipcase (a little marked, spines darkened, extremities rubbed and bumped, splits on hinges). Provenance: Alexander Gilchrist (1828-1861, inscription on vol.I front free endpaper 'To A. Gilchrist Esq. , with many kind regards , T. Carlyle , Chelsea, 7 decr 1858').
Second edition. PRESENTATION COPY INSCRIBED BY CARLYLE TO GILCHRIST, the biographer of Blake and Carlyle's friend and next-door neighbour in Chelsea. Tarr gives the date of publication of the second edition as 1859, but does not record a second edition dated 1858; volumes III-VI of Friedrich II were published between 1862 and 1865 after Gilchrist's death.
