FIRST EDITION, a good copy. Published 9 June 1876, the English edition of The Adventures of Tom Sawyer is the true first edition. Mark Twain did not want an American edition published until the novel had first appeared in England, thus securing a British copyright. The publication of the American edition was delayed, perhaps as Mark Twain suspected because American Publishing Co. was pushing too many other books or perhaps his publisher was unenthusisastic about Tom Sawyer. By the time the prospectus and agents were in the field an unauthorized Canadian edition had been published on or about 29 July. The American edition was the last to be published, nearly 6 months after the appearance of the English edition. BAL 3367.
