Lot Essay

The traditional identification of the sitter as Anthony Babington appears unlikely. The Babington of the eponymous plot was executed in 1586, and although he had children, no details of these or his grandchildren (the sitter in the portrait would have been born in 1593 or 1594) are recorded.
