An old label attached to the reverse of the present painting identifies the sitter as Lady de Mauley. The sitter, co-heir of the ancient barony of Mauley, was born on 19 October 1788, and was the daughter and heir of Anthony, 5th Earl of Shaftesbury, by his wife, Barbara, daughter and heir of Sir John Webb, Bt., of Oldstock House. Wiltshire. She married on 8 August 1814, the Hon. William Francis Spencer Ponsonby, third son of Frederick, 3rd Earl of Bessborough, who was created Baron de Mauley of Canford, Dorset, on 10 July, 1838. She died on 5 June 1844; in 1848 a monument to her by Raffaelle Monti is at St Nicholas's Church, Hatherop, Gloucestershire. Her eldest son, Charles Frederick Ashley Cooper, succeeded to the barony on 16 May 1855.
This may be the portrait which Ward & Roberts refer to in their (op. cit), at that time believed to be in the possession of a grandson of the sitter.
