Painted half-length turned partially to her right, wearing a gilt- enriched lace shawl, pearl earrings and necklace and a purple dress with a jewelled gilt belt centred by an emerald, before a stippled brown ground, the reverse inscribed in black script Elisa Gde Duchesse de Toscane

Lot Essay

Elisa Bonaparte (1777-1820) was Emperor Napoleon I's younger sister and married Felix Baciocchi (1762-1841), Duke of Lucca in 1797. She was created Princess of Lucca and Piombino in 1806 and Grand Duchess of Tuscany from 1809-14.
