This scene has been taken from an engraving by S. A. Bolswert after a painting of St. Ignatius of Loyola and St. Francis Xavier by Rubens. This service may have been ordered to commemorate the bi-centenary of the establishment of the Order of the Company of Jesus, of which St. Ignatius was the founder member. A very similar teapoy and cover from the collection of Madame Abel de Lacerda in Caramulo, Lisbon is illustrated by M. Beurdeley, Porcelain of the East India Companies, London, 1962, p. 204, cat. 231. A teapot and cover from the Mottahedeh Collection is illustrated by Howard and Ayers, China for the West, London and New York, 1978, vol. I, p. 252, no. 246, where details of the life of the saint, and the history of the Order are discussed. A saucer is illustrated by Hervouët and Bruneau, La Porcelaine des Compagnies des Indes à Décor Occidental, Paris, 1986, p. 272, fig. 11.43.
