Lot Essay

It is unusual to find St.John turned towards the Cross on Dutch-decorated dishes; see the related dish, with both standing figures facing the spectator, also illustrated by Hervouët and Bruneau, ibid.,, 1986, no.16.141 from the Royal Museums of Art and History, Brussels. Two teabowls and saucers with similar design from the Dr Anton C. R. Dreesmann collection, were sold in Christie's Amsterdam, 16 April 2002, lots 1311 and 1312.
