CIRCA 1745-50
Decorated with a continuous scene on the exterior with 'Les Pèlerins de l'Île de Cythère', on one side the couple being escorted by Cupid holding a flaming torch, on the other side three musicians playing to a lady standing before buildings in the distance, a gilt scrolling foliage band around the foot repeated in a roundel at the centre of the interior, restored

Lot Essay

The scene showing the couple is taken from an engraving by Bernard Picart of 1708, illustrated by J. G. Phillips, China-Trade Porcelain, Cambridge, Massachusetts, 1956, fig. 44. The scene on the other side is closely related to that in an engraving by C.N. Cochin after Watteau. See lot 162 for the similar scene.
