Lot Essay

These scenes were most likely inspired by a painting by Watteau illustrating scenes from the Commedia dell'Arte. The figure wearing the yellow 'pierrot' costume is very similar to 'Gilles' by Watteau. For a saucer from this service, see Hervouët and Bruneau, La Porcelaine des Compagnies des Indes à Décor Occidental, Paris, 1986, p.164, fig. 7.64, and ibid. p.203, fig. 9.32 for a similar version on another saucer taken from an engraving by C. N. Cochin and where the Commedia dell'Arte interpretation is suggested.
