UNDERGLAZE-BLUE KANGXI SIX-CHARACTER MARK WITHIN A DOUBLE CIRCLE AND OF THE PERIOD (1662-1722)
Finely potted with deep rounded sides rising to a flaring rim, the exterior painted with a blossoming apricot tree on one side, the reverse with a poetic inscription and a seal with a single character shang, 'appreciation'

Lot Essay

The couplet on this cup is an extract from the poem In Reply to Zhangsun Yi for Sending Me Apricot from Lanxi by the Tang poet Qian Qi (710-780) and can be translated:

Its clear fragrance in harmony with the smell of the over-night rain,
Its fine colour surpasses the brilliancy of sunshine reflected on the haze.
