Lot Essay

This figure of the infant Christ belongs to a group known as Nino Jesus, Salvador del Mundo (Infant Christ, Saviour of the World), and was inspired by Andalucian sculptors of circa 1600. Sculptures of this type were popular within the entire Spanish empire and would have been made in the Philippines for the Catholic Spanish and Portuguese missionaries living in the Far East.
