Lot Essay

See the slightly smaller famille verte jardinière of identical form but with pheasants, peony and rockwork, formerly in the collection of the Marquis of Exeter, Burghley House and sold in these Rooms, 7 & 8 June 1888, lot 179, now in the Rijksmuseum, illustrated by C.J.A. Jörg, Chinese Ceramics in the Collection of the Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam, 1997, no.160, p.149, where the author dates this type as late 17th Century and states that such pieces, especially the enamelled versions, are rare.
