The exterior with two large panels of figures at leisure on a terrace and two smaller panels of figures in conversation in a landscape, all reserved on a iron-red and gilt Y-pattern ground, the interior with an ornate roundel enclosing four figures in a river landscape below an elaborate floral band and an underglaze-blue cell pattern band on the rim, minor rim chip restored

Lot Essay

This bowl is accompnied by a card dated 3rd June 1917, stating:
'This bowl was purchased in India by my Grandfather Capt. Matthew Hore, RN (born 1765 died 1826) with his first prize money - his eldest Son, my d. Father, James Smythe Hore was Christened in it July 1795 ...also my d. Daughter Mary Davison Bell. My Father expressed a wish that it should be owned by one who bore the name of Hore.'
