Lot Essay

This figure originally held a dog in her hands and was seated beside a peacock appearing from rockwork. See W. Sargent, The Copeland Collection, Salem, 1991, pp. 124 and 125, no. 57. The ormolu replacement lotus bud in her hands cleverly mirrors the bud beside the lotus cup, which was originally intended as a brush-washer.
