VASE CYLINDRIQUE POLYCHROME
Classique Final, environ 550-950 après J.-C.
Les parois de la partie intérieure sont finement gravées d'une scène complexe se déroulant probablement dans les cieux, comme le suggère les inhabituelles bandes noires qui encadrent la frise principale. Cette dernière regroupe un scorpion, une tortue ainsi que d'autres créatures qui constitue d'ordinaire le zodiaque Maya. On y trouve aussi une pirogue transportant cinq personnages, qui est une référence fréquente des Mayas qui, considérant le Ciel comme un monde aquatique, suggèrent ainsi un voyage à travers la Voie Lactée : ici, le rameur est masqué, accompagné d'un prisonnier attaché, et d'un capitaine qui manie une longue lance à la proue. Sous la base du vase courent trois caractères invoqués lors d'un rituel de sacrifice au cours duquel la victime est attachée par le haut et dont le sang jaillit par un blessure faite à la tête (ce qui peut être considéré comme une allusion métaphorique à une pluie de météorites).

The gently inward-curving sides with a complex ritual scene probably occurring in the sky as indicated by the unusual black bands framing the main frieze, containing a scorpion, turtle and other creatures known to animate the Maya zodiac, a canoe carries five figures. The Maya frequently refer to the Sky as a watery place suggesting that this is a journey through the Milky Way, composed of a masked paddler, a seated bound captive, some of lighter complexion, and the 'captain' wielding a long spear at the prow, below on the base line three characters involved in a sacrifice ritual with the victim held by his top knot and blood gushing from his head wound, perhaps a metaphorical allusion to a meteor shower, pink glyphs in the field, in deep and light orange, pink, black, light brown and white.
A group of vessels, commonly denoted as 'Pink Glyph' are characterized by the distinctive usage of dark rose pigment diluted to pink also used in the hieroglyphic writing.
