A Three-Case Inro [Medicine Case] and Two Others
Edo Period (Early 18th-Mid 19th Century)
The first lenticular with applied himotoshi, black-lacquer ground with medium-density kinpun, decoration in gold and aokin togidashi-e, compartments and risers gold nashiji, shoulders and rims gold fundame, lacquered ojime with floral decoration, ivory manju netsuke incised and stained with a map of Japan and Chinese inscriptions; the second circular, two cases, squared-off lenticular with integral himotoshi, plain wood ground, decoration in applied pottery, interior plain wood, signed . . .sai to [carved by . . .sai] with a kao, glass ojime, netsuke lacquered wood in the shape of a bag from which a snake emerges; the third four cases, oval with applied himotoshi, decoration in carved red lacquer, compartments and risers gold nashiji, shoulders and rims gold fundame, openwork metal ojime


The first a map of Japan with inscribed cartouches giving the name of provinces and surrounding countries; the second a brazier and other utensils for the Tea Ceremony; the third with Chinese scholars beneath pine trees
