Three Ivory Netsuke
Edo Period (Mid-Late 18th Century)
The first a standing figure of a sarumawashi [monkey trainer and exhibitor] with his monkey on his right shoulder, the himotoshi formed by two almost equal holes in the back, unsigned; the second Chokaro Sennin standing with a gourd on his shoulders, his shawl and skirt of mugwort leaves, the surface well worn and patinated, the himotoshi formed by a large and small hole in the back, the feet drilled with small holes, unsigned; the third a figure of Hotei compactly carved from a triangular section of ivory, standing on his right leg with his left knee slightly raised and carrying a large sack on his back, the himotoshi formed by two holes to the left and right in the back of his sack, old wear and age cracks, unsigned
