A Suzuribako [Box for Writing Utensils]
Edo Period (Early-Mid 19th Century)
With overhanging lid, straight sides and rounded corners, the exterior black-lacquer ground densely sprinkled with fine gold kinpun, decorated in gold, aokin, silver and coloured hiramaki-e and takamaki-e with oki-kanagai [individually positioned fragments of shell] and gold kirikane depicting the Kengyu and Shokujo or Tanabatatsume [Herdsman and Weaving-Girl] at their annual meeting, the sides with cloud designs, the interior of the lid and box with autumn plants and the moon, the interior of the box with platforms at top and bottom holding the inkstone in place, the gilt and silvered waterdropper with a two-tier base, in the form of two overlapping shikishi [poem-papers] decorated with birds, the inkstone with a gold fundame rim and two paper labels, one reading [Glasgow] People's Palace Exhibition, 1905 Reg. No. 550, the other reading Collection of Arthur Kay, F.S.A., 65, the base gold nashiji, old wear and slight damage
