An Unusual Bunko [Document Box]
With signature Haritsu, Edo Period (Mid-19th Century)
Of standard Ritsuo form with flat flush-fitting lid, straight sides, cusped corners, the lid with a chiri-i [bevelled 'dust' ledge] decorated with karakusa motifs in gold hiramaki-e, the ground of plain wood with exaggerated grain brought up by rubbing with hot sand or ash, the sides plain except for two simple ring-fittings on either side and metal reinforcements to the corners of the lid, the lid decorated in wood, metal, high-relief lacquer and ivory with a tansu with a sliding door that moves to one side to reveal the interior, a flower-arrangement in a basket, a hanging openwork bronze incense-burner, an inro with an ojime and netsuke, and a fan inscribed in inlaid shell with a nine-character inscription The monkeys' calls echo down the path as it winds its way through sky, mountains and a thousand crags, the interior black lacquer with bands and gold and silver hirame, some old damage, the bottom left-hand corner of the lid with a gold hiramaki-e signature Haritsu and an applied red-lacquer seal Kan, some old damage
