Ken'ya started making pottery at the Chomeji-in in Mukojima in Tokyo in 1875 after a varied career as a shipbuilder for the shogunate, a brick-maker (the first to do so in Japan, in 1869) and a creator of clay dolls. His work owes much to Kenzan and to Ritsuo, who influenced Ken'ya's use of lacquer in his overglaze enamel decoration.
