Grange Hermitage--Vintage 1974
South Australia. Penfolds
Lot 835 level base of neck. Lot 836 good label. Level into neck
Considered a good wine from one of the most difficult vintages in memory. Rigorous grape selection saw one of the smallest Grange makes on record - 2,300 cases. It was future chief winemaker John Duval's first vintage with Penfolds, and a baptism of fire. First Grange to be made in Nurioopta and fermented in stainless steel.
Tasting note: brick red. Intense apricot/prune/vanillin/meaty aromas, quite opulent. Fleshy and lightly structured with prune apricot fruit, fine-grained tannins and a firm finish. A.C.
