Grange Hermitage--Vintage 1983
South Australia. Penfolds
One bottled re-corked at the Penfold's Wine Clinic (no date). Penfolds capsule. Plain cork. Level base of neck. The other bottle good label. Level base of neck
An extraordinary season of heat, drought, fires and floods, which resulted in small yields of huge wines with long-term potential. "Very big and concentrated", said Max Schubert in 1993. Rigorous fruit selection meant a much smaller than usual volume of Grange.
Tasting note: deep crimson. Very complex and intense apricot/blackberry/exotic scented aromas with touches of aniseed/liquorice. Beautifully constructed palate with abundant apricot/meaty fruit, excellent concentration and tannin definition. Will almost certainly develop down the same path as the 1971 vintage. A.C.
Beautifully concentrated... pronounced tannins and underlying sweet oak. Super wine. R.O.P.
