High Cabernet Sauvignon, 13 Ungrafted, low yielding vines. Excellent growing conditions. Cool, dry summer with one of the dryest and latest ever harvests. Spicy, berry-like fruit. 5 stars. M.B.
Considered the best Grange of the 1980s, from an outstanding vintage. Don Ditter retired as chief winemaker in 1986 and was succeeded by John Duval, who had joined Penfolds 12 years earlier
Tasting note: deep crimson/purple. Quintessential Grange. Sweet and complex chocolate/paneforte/prune-like fruit with some liquorice. The palate is richly flavoured and chocolaty with huge concentration, fine but vice-like tannins, balanced by sweet paneforte/apricot fruit and superb length. A blossoming wine. A.C.
Adolescent, yet close to perfection. R.O.P.
