Two dishes of similar shape but from the Yuan dynasty are illustrated in 2000 Years of Chinese Lacquer, Catalogue of an exhibition jointly presented by the Oriental Ceramic Society of Hong Kong and the Art Gallery, The Chinese University of Hong Kong, 24th September-21st November 1993, p.84, pl.37 and 38 ; another dish from early 15th century of very close shape and size to the current dish is illustrated in From Innovation to Conformity, Chinese Lacquer from the 13th to the 16th centuries, Bluett & Sons (ed.), London, June 1989, p.52, pl.17. The central decorations are different but still have all classical motifs of this period (rocks, water, pavilions...). When looking at the representations of the sky, the water and the land we can see that the convention of appropriate diapers was not fully established at the end of the 14th century which can clearly be seen on the current dish (the diaper used for the sky will become the common "land" motif).
