Lot Essay

A very similar cup from the William Rockhill Nelson Gallery of Art, U.S.A, is illustrated in Hai-wai Yi-chen Chinese Art in Overseas Collections : Lacquerware, published by the National Palace Museum, Taipei, Taiwan, Republic of China, 1987, p.86, pl.83. This lichee pattern is typical from this period and used as decoration on other wares such as two small boxes and covers illustrated in Hu Shih-chang and J. Wilkinson, Chinese Lacquer, National Museums of Scotland Publishing, Edimburgh 1998, p.50, pl.25 and in J.C.Y Watt and B. Brennan Ford, East Asian Lacquer, The Florence and Herbert Irving Collection, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York 1992, p.105, pl.40
