Compare the fine deep carving and decorative scheme with a large central bloom surrounded by buds and artfully carved leaves to a very similar box and cover from the Ming dynasty illustrated in Karamono, Imported Lacquerwork-Chinese, Korean and Ryukyuan (Okinawa), Selections from the Tokugawa Art Museum, No.2, Tokugawa 1997, pl.63 ; The box presented in B.Morgan and R.Krahl, From Innovation to Conformity, Chinese Lacquer from the 13th to 16th centuries, Bluett & Sons (ed.), London, June 1989, p.46, pl.14 is bigger (Diametre: 18,8 cm) but has the same ochre background and a similar peony motif even less deeply carved than the current example
