Lot Essay
A carved red lacquer tray of this size is very unusual and rare. Although no similar tray have been published, a very close central scene with the same figures are reproduced on both covers of a carved red lacquer box and on an inlaid-decorated one from Ming dynasty, illustrated in Sydney L. Moss, Escape from the dusty world, Chinese Paintings and Literari Works of Art, London 1999, p.210, pl.57 and p.226-231, pl.62. The hunting scene of the current tray is taking place in a landscape made of rocks and trees and shows a falconer (or parasol-bearer) holding a hawk on his wrist, beside a dog, a horsman resting and another one aiming a goose
