each of oblong form with a shell and leaf decorated gadroon rim, the domed covers with a detachable branch and shell handle, each side engraved with a coat-of-arms and a crest, engraved Charles Pascoe Grenfell underneath, supported on a conforming plated stand with four part wood bun feet and with two handles - the dishes 31.8cm. (12½in.) wide, 296oz. (9,215gr.)

Lot Essay

The arms are those of Grenfell impaling St. Leger.

Charles Pascoe Grenfell was the second son of Pascoe Grenfell, D.C.L. (1761-1838) of Taplow House Buckinghamshire, MP for Marlow and later Penryhn, and his first wife Charlotte Granville. The elder Grenfell later married the Hon. Georgiana St. Leger, daughter of 1st Viscount Doneraille, following the death of Charlotte in 1790.

A soup tureen by John Parker, London, 1805, also engraved with an inscription relating to Charles Pascoe Grenfell was offered at Sotheby's London 7 November 1996, lot 123.
