During the 17th Century, Hispanic bed forms developed into three distinct types:- those with architectural headpieces in the Herrerran style decorated with metal mounts and turned posts topped with pointed finials; Portuguese-type beds elaborately turned with spiral twists and flame-like finials; and those with headboards shaped with Baroque scrolls and hung separately to the wall. The Herrerran bed, of which the bed offered here is an elaborate example, is now thought to emanate from Castille, whilst the Portuguese and Baroque types are thought to emanate from Catalunna and the Balearic Islands, respectively. An almost identical Herreran bed in the Montenegro Collection, Lugo, dating from the 17th Century, is illustrated in G. Hardendorff Burr, Hispanic Furniture, New York, 1964, p.81, whilst an example of the Balearic type from Mallorca was sold from Ca'n Puig Y Castillo de Bendinat, Mallorca, Christie's house sale, 24-25 May 1999, lot 368 (4,200,000 ptas, exc. premium).
