Lot Essay

Quentin Laurens has kindly confirmed the authenticity of this work, which will be included in his forthcoming Henri Laurens catalogue raisonnée.

Tériade entrusted Henri Laurens to prepare the illustrations for Les idylles, published in 1945. It was during this collaboration that the artist first explored the medium of the woodcut, and their sculptural quality was ideally suited to accompany a classical text--the bucolic poems of Theocritus, written in the third century B.C. Laurens similarly illustrated the Tériade editions of Loukios ou L'âne (1946) and Dialogues (1951).
