Tériade published countless works by Matisse, regularly including his works in and on the covers of Verve. The present work was conceived and reproduced in the fourteenth printing of volume I of Verve. The most famous of their collaborations came in the form of Jazz, printed in 1947 after the artist's cut-outs. Matisse had used a paper cut-out design in an early issue of Verve but when Tériade first put forth the idea of an entire book using paper cut-out designs, Matisse initially refused. After some persuasion and further development of the technique, the artist was convinced and put the whole of his energy into the project, which he then presented to Tériade with the title Jazz. In addition, Matisse completed the illustrations for Téraide's publications of Lettres de la religieuse portugaise (1946); Charles d'Orléans (1950); and Une fête en cimmérie (1963).
