BUSH PRAISES THE U.S. MILITARY IN PANAMA: "OUR TROOPS DID AN OUTSTANDING JOB"
A rare autograph letter signed in office in which President Bush commends American troops for their campaign to capture General Manuel Noriega, the former President of Panama, under indictment in the United States for drug trafficking. After defense forces under Noriega repeatedly harassed American personnel, Bush acted. On 20 December 1989, U.S. forces invaded Panama and, by January 3, 1990, Noriega surrendered. Here, Bush thanks Campbell for his words of encouragement: "Many thanks for your support for our actions in Panama. Our troops did an outstanding job. Barbara joins me in sending our warmest best wishes for 1990."
