SPECIALLY BOUND for presentation in orange-red levant morocco, covers with double gilt rules at edges, red marbled endpapers, color covers bound in (slight rubbing at extremities). LIMITED EDITION, no.70a of 75 copies in the special edition. PRESENTATION COPY TO PETER LAWFORD, inscribed in pen on preliminary page bearing limitation statement: "For Peter with all the best Jack Christmas /1962."
A specially bound copy of the White House guide prepared at the urging and with the assistance of First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy, whose prefatory letter expresses the hope that "may it remind you that many First Families loved this house--and that each and every one of the left something of themselves behind in it..." Only two other copies of this special limited edition have been offered at auction, including one inscribed to Pamela Harriman and another to David Powers (sale Sotheby's, 25 November 1997, lot 296, $8,000).
The recipient of this special copy was a member of the Kennedy circle, Peter Lawford (1923-1984), the English-born actor and husband of Pat Kennedy, whom he divorced in 1966.
